State Bar backs nonlawyer legal aid program
The proposal would allow trained community justice workers to provide limited legal services under the supervision of approved legal aid organizations, an effort to narrow California's persistent access-to-justice gap.
The State Bar of California has recommended that the state Supreme Court approve a program allowing trained nonlawyers to provide limited legal services under the supervision of legal aid organizations, a potentially significant change in how legal assistance is delivered to low-income Californians.
The Board of Trustees approved the Community Justice Worker proposal last week. If the Supreme Court gives its approval, training could begin next year.
