Bill barring former ICE officers from California police jobs heads to Newsom

AB 1896 would prohibit former federal officers who participated in immigration enforcement from becoming California peace officers, setting up a potential constitutional fight over state employment rules.

A bill awaiting Gov. Gavin Newsom's signature could set up a constitutional fight over whether California may bar former federal immigration officers from becoming state and local police officers.

AB 1896, by Assemblymember Mark González, D-Los Angeles, would prohibit agencies from hiring as peace officers former federal officers or contractors who personally participated in immigration enforcement. The measure narrowly passed the Assembly on a 43-19 party-line vote Monday.
