Meta faces major test in states' social media addiction trial
Twenty-nine attorneys general will take Meta to trial in Oakland over claims involving social media addiction and children's privacy, in a case seeking potentially hundreds of billions of dollars in penalties and changes to the company's platforms.
Meta has already been handed a pair of high-profile court losses this year. In April, a Los Angeles jury found it liable for harm caused by a plaintiff's social media addiction, while a New Mexico judge docked the company nearly $1 billion, finding it violated consumer protection laws and its products constituted a public nuisance.
On Monday, it faces what looks -- on paper, at least -- to be its biggest legal battle yet.
