Mediators win narrower disclosure rules, indigent defense bill advances
SB 574 advanced with tighter limits on what neutrals must disclose to the State Bar, while an indigent-defense bill moved forward.
Lawmakers have narrowed, but not eliminated, disclosure requirements for mediators who participate in a fledgling oversight program for neutrals managed by the State Bar. Meanwhile, several other bills of interest to attorneys died for the year as the California Legislature hit a Friday deadline to clear fiscal committees.
The changes to SB 574 followed weeks of lobbying by mediators who fear the new requirements could compromise the confidentiality at the core of their practices....
