Talc powder verdict hands Johnson & Johnson another major loss
A Los Angeles jury found Johnson & Johnson solely responsible for Maria T. Lozano's fatal mesothelioma and awarded her heirs $32 million, rejecting the company's argument that other environmental or occupational exposures caused her illness.
A Los Angeles Superior Court jury on Tuesday ordered Johnson & Johnson to pay $32 million to the heirs of Maria T. Lozano, finding the company negligent and concluding that its talc-based Baby Powder was defectively designed and caused her fatal mesothelioma.
The jury assigned 100% of the responsibility for Lozano's illness to Johnson & Johnson, finding that no other non-parties, such as other cosmetic companies or automotive part manufacturers, were at fault.
