RANCHO CUCAMONGA - As a deputy public defender in San Bernardino, Judge Michael A. Knish served on the California State Bar's Commission on Judicial Nominees Evaluation, or JNE, where he reviewed applications of aspiring jurists. One of the questions asked applicants why they wanted to be a judge.

"I started reading their answers and realized, 'Wow, that applies to me too,'" Knish said.
