LOS ANGELES - David V. Herriford began working in his native St. Louis at 14, as a baseball youth league umpire. He recalls being paid $26.93 every other week, whether there had been one game or a dozen.
Years later, after he hung up his umpire's uniform, a judge who'd convinced him to apply for the bench told him a game is only good when there is good officiating.
