LOS ANGELES - When Superior Court Judge Nicole C. Bershon moved from criminal court to family law, she expected the work to be legally demanding. She did not expect it to be more emotionally charged.
In criminal court, she learned early on, the tone in the courtroom is often reciprocal.
"As long as you treat people in the criminal courtroom with respect," she said, "I have felt that they're usually okay."
