Property value loss added to causes of action in suits over chemical emergency

Orange County residents and businesses have filed new lawsuits against GKN Aerospace, alleging negligence caused a chemical emergency that displaced thousands and damaged property, businesses and livelihoods.

Fresh legal challenges target GKN Aerospace following the May 21, 2026, chemical emergency that displaced an estimated 50,000 Orange County residents.

Authorities evacuated surrounding neighborhoods after a tank containing methyl methacrylate overheated at GKN Aerospace's Garden Grove facility.

New complaints filed by residents Dinh Tran and Marian Li allege the aircraft manufacturer's negligence led to the "thermal runaway" of a massive methyl methacrylate (MMA) tank.

In the federal class action Tran v. GKN Aerospace, plaintiffs Tran and Drippys Gourmet Ice Cream Sandwiches claim the facility failed to maintain essential cooling systems and safety valves. This lawsuit, seeking damages for lost wages, business interruption and emotional distress, was filed by R. Rex Parris, Alexander R. Wheeler, Jason P. Fowler, and Edmond L. Guidry, IV of the Parris Law Firm in Lancaster. Tran et al. v. GKN Aerospace Transparency Systems, Inc., 8:26-cv-01353 (C.D. Cal., filed May 27, 2026).

Simultaneously, in Orange County Superior Court, Marian Li and three co-plaintiffs filed an individual action alleging that GKN's failure to control the volatile chemical deprived them of the safe use of their homes for three days. Their attorney, Shawn Steel of Steel & Eisner, LLP in Seal Beach, argues the incident created a lasting stigma affecting property values. Li et al. v. GKN Aerospace Transparency Systems, Inc. (Orange Super. Ct.., filed May 27, 2026).

These new cases join a rapidly expanding list of litigation. Earlier, attorney Jack G. Rutherford of Morgan & Morgan and Jesse M. Creed of Panish Shea Ravipudi LLP in Los Angeles filed a class action, Burciaga v. GKN Aerospace, on behalf of thousands of plaintiffs. Other federal actions include Page v. GKN Aerospace, initiated by Filippo Marchino of the X-Law Group PC and Lawrence J. Conlan of Presidio Law Firm LLP, and a suit by Sean L. Litteral of Litteral LLP.

Additionally, attorneys from ACTS LAW, Becker Law Group, and Nguyen Lawyers ALC have formed a coalition to represent those affected. While GKN previously apologized for the disruption, the litigation continues to grow as plaintiffs seek to hold the company accountable for what they describe as a preventable industrial disaster.
