'Technology displacement' disclosures due to AI-related layoffs are required under Cal-WARN
Starting Jan. 1, 2027, SB 951 will require California employers to disclose when AI drives mass layoffs, relocations or terminations, putting technology-related job cuts in the public spotlight.
California employers that plan to replace workers with AI may soon have to say so in writing. Senate Bill 951 was approved by Gov. Newsom on Sept. 30, 2026, and takes effect Jan. 1, 2027. SB 951 amends the California WARN Act (Labor Code § 1400.5 et seq.) (Cal-WARN) to require additional disclosures when a mass layoff, relocation or termination is driven by AI or other automated technology.
