California expands veterans benefits on housing, leave and college access
Current law reduces a qualifying veteran's primary residence assessment by $180,671, adjusted annually for inflation. SB 296 exempts 50% of a home's value, up to $1 million, for veterans who are 100% disabled.
Disabled veterans could see their property tax bills shrink or disappear under a five-bill benefits package Gov. Gavin Newsom signed Monday. The bipartisan measures also expand paid family leave and college access and streamline connections to veterans' services, affecting disabled homeowners, National Guard and Reserve families, and students using the GI Bill or CalVet College Fee Waiver.
