New laws expand judges' pension options, stiffen penalties for illegal client solicitation

Gov. Gavin Newsom signed measures allowing judges to name non-spouse pension beneficiaries and mandating disbarment for attorneys convicted of illegal client solicitation.

Judges will be able to name non-spouses as pension beneficiaries, while attorneys convicted of illegally paying for clients will face mandatory disbarment under two bills Gov. Gavin Newsom signed over the weekend.

AB 1844, a priority for the California Judges Association, allows judges to designate someone other than a spouse to receive continuing pension payments after their death.
