9th Circuit signals California federal officer ID law will fall

The panel that temporarily blocked SB 805 in April showed little inclination to change course, saying California cannot directly regulate federal officers performing their duties.

A 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals panel signaled Tuesday that it will strike down a California law requiring nonuniformed federal law enforcement officers to display identification showing their agency and badge number.

The same panel temporarily blocked SB 805 in April, concluding California likely violated the Supremacy Clause by attempting to regulate federal officers performing their official duties.
