Fresno can rename street for Cesar Chavez, appeals court rules despite reversal
A divided 5th District Court of Appeal rejected a compelled-speech challenge to the city's renaming of a street for Cesar Chavez, even though Fresno has since restored the street's former name following allegations against the labor leader.
An appeals court has ruled that the city of Fresno can rename a street after disgraced labor icon Cesar Chavez -- even though the city no longer wants to.
The 5th District Court of Appeal on Friday upheld a lower court ruling rejecting a challenge by Community Compact, a local activist group that argued Chavez had little connection to Fresno and that the renaming amounted to compelled political speech.
