Former Balboa CEO secures $79.5M judgment against Ameris Bank

A jury found the lender wrongfully fired Balboa Capital founder Patrick Byrne and retaliated against him for challenging the bank's compensation practices. The bank has reserved funds for the award and plans to appeal.

Ameris Bank has been ordered to pay $79.5 million after a federal judge entered final judgment Monday on a jury verdict finding the bank wrongfully fired Balboa Capital founder Patrick Byrne and retaliated against him for whistleblowing.

Central District Judge Michelle Williams entered judgment on a June verdict after jurors found Ameris liable on every claim they reached: wrongful termination in violation of public policy, whistleblower retaliation under Labor Code Section 1102....
