Anthropic settlement wins final approval; judge reduces lawyers' fee request by $86M
A federal judge gave final approval to a $1.5 billion class action settlement resolving claims that Anthropic used pirated books to train its AI models, while reducing plaintiffs' attorneys' fee request from $187.5 million to $101.6 million, finding the larger award would have been excessive.
U.S. District Judge Araceli Martinez-Olguín granted final approval to a $1.5 billion settlement -- and $101.6 million in attorneys' fees -- between Anthropic and a group of authors alleging the AI developer infringed on their copyrights by using their works to train its large language AI model.
