Class action claims Google Nest cameras collect facial data without consent

A proposed class action filed in federal court alleges Google's Nest home cameras unlawfully collect and store facial-recognition data on passersby without their knowledge or consent through the devices' "familiar face detection" feature, violating California and Virginia privacy laws.

A new class action alleges Google stores facial recognition data on people who walk by its Nest home cameras without their consent.

The lawsuit, filed Thursday in the Northern District of California, revolves around a feature called "familiar face detection," which stores a digital map of faces that come into the camera's view. When a new face approaches the camera, it notifies the homeowner.
