Meta liable under federal child privacy law ahead of social media addiction trial

Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers ruled that Meta violated COPPA by failing to notify parents before collecting data from users under 13, granting partial summary judgment to state attorneys general as the multidistrict litigation heads to an August trial.

Meta violated the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act by failing to notify parents of under-13 users that their children's data was being collected, U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers ruled in an order issued Monday night. However, the judge held that there's a triable dispute as to whether Meta's required to follow COPPA in the first place.
