Appeal heats up over San Francisco public defender contempt ruling
The parties filed competing responses to amicus briefs supporting and opposing San Francisco Public Defender Manohar Raju as the 1st District Court of Appeal considers whether his refusal to accept additional cases warranted contempt.
Attorneys for San Francisco Public Defender Manohar Raju urged the 1st District Court of Appeal to disregard amicus briefs filed by District Attorney Brooke Jenkins and Mayor Daniel Lurie in support of the San Francisco Superior Court's contempt ruling against him.
Raju was held in contempt after refusing a court order to accept additional cases, arguing that doing so would require him to violate his ethical duties because of excessive public defender caseloads.
