Bail bond insurers agree to $66 million antitrust settlement

Nine bail bond insurance underwriters agreed to pay $66 million and end alleged price-fixing practices in a proposed settlement of a California antitrust class action pending in Oakland.

Nine bail bond underwriters agreed to pay a combined $66 million to settle a class action over allegations they conspired to fix the price of a fee tacked on to private bail bonds in California.

The plaintiffs, who posted bail through private bail bonds between 2004 and 2026 were represented by Lieff Cabraser, which filed for preliminary approval of the settlement Thursday with U.S. District Judge Jon S. Tigar in Oakland. In re California Bail Bond Antitrust Litigation, 4...
