Judge certifies class action accusing Ricoh of systematic printer-service overbilling

Rejecting Ricoh's argument that determining liability would require individualized review of hundreds of thousands of contracts, U.S. District Judge John F. Walter found that class members can be identified through the company's records and that common issues predominate.

A federal judge has certified a nationwide class action against Ricoh USA, Inc., a allowing a California print shop to pursue claims on behalf of thousands of customers who allege the company systematically overbilled them for printer maintenance services in violation of standardized contracts.

In a statement of decision filed Thursday, U.S. District Judge John F. Walter ruled that the claims brought by Mike the Printer, Inc. are suitable for class-wide resolution.
