Trial opens Wednesday in a lawsuit alleging a Los Angeles police officer fired too hastily without a clear zone of fire when he shot a man attacking a woman with a bicycle lock inside a clothing store, killing a 14-year-old girl in a dressing room he could not see.

Opening statements are scheduled in Burbank in the case stemming from the Dec. 23, 2021, shooting inside a Burlington Coat Factory in North Hollywood.
