Bench shortages loom as courts race to recruit judges

From San Diego to Kern County, courts are holding outreach events to build a pipeline as vacancies fluctuate and retirements climb.

On Tuesday, the San Diego County Superior Court will hold a judicial recruitment panel, despite having just one listed vacancy. A few counties to the north, the Kern County Superior Court shows just two current vacancies, according to the March 1 vacancy report from the Judicial Council. Yet that court is holding a series of events to find people willing to serve as judges in its remote Ridgecrest and Mojave courthouses.
