Privacy bills targeting AI, online content advance in Assembly committee

Measure imposing liability for nonconsensual images wins unanimous support; workplace surveillance bill draws business opposition.

California lawmakers on Wednesday advanced two privacy bills targeting artificial intelligence and online platforms, as recent court verdicts have increased pressure on the tech industry.

The Assembly Privacy and Consumer Protection Committee unanimously approved AB 1705, which would create civil liability for operators of adult websites that fail to take reasonable steps to ensure content does not depict minors or nonconsenting individuals.
