Judge preliminarily approves $68 million Google Assistant privacy settlement

U.S. District Judge Beth Labson Freeman granted preliminary approval to a $68 million settlement in a 2019 class action against Google over allegations it failed to delete accidental recordings made by its voice assistant on 'smart' devices. Because users do not consent to accidental recordings, plaintiffs argued, Google violated California privacy law by storing them.

A final approval hearing is scheduled for Oct. 1.
