Prop 36 adds 34,000 felony cases as lawmakers debate funding

Judicial Council report shows rising court workload in the first full year of the voter-approved law as legislators consider new funding proposals.

Proposition 36 led to 34,612 new felony cases last year, according to a new report from the Judicial Council. Meanwhile, lawmakers are pushing several bills to fund the 2024 ballot measure amid dire state budget forecasts.
