Investor-loss estimates hit record high despite dip in securities filings

Fewer securities class actions were filed in 2025, but the losses investors claimed hit a record $694 billion -- a number experts say could signal massive settlements ahead.

While the number of new securities class actions declined a bit in 2025, the size of claimed investor losses reached an all-time high, possibly setting the stage for major settlements in the future.

Alexander "Sasha" Aganin, senior vice president of Cornerstone Research, which helped put together the annual report, said the number of new securities class actions dropped 8% nationwide, from 226 new cases to 207.
