Judge upholds Huntington Beach voter ID law in clash with state officials

A Superior Court judge has ruled that Huntington Beach can require voter ID in municipal elections, rejecting the state's legal challenge and setting up a high-stakes appeal over the balance of local and state authority in California election law.

An Orange County judge upheld Huntington Beach's voter ID law for municipal elections, rejecting the State of California's attempt to strike it down as a violation of state election laws.

In a closely watched case with statewide implications, Superior Court Judge Nico A. Dourbetas ruled Monday that the city's charter amendment requiring voter identification falls within the constitutional powers of charter cities to control local election procedures.
