Right after the 2020 election, a non-profit group of activist lawyers from Washington, D.C. sued the City and County of Los Angeles, alleging that the bail schedule (and also the imposition of monetary bail in general) violates various state and federal constitutional provisions. In particular, because some people cannot afford bail, those persons will allegedly suffer greater harm while those who are not indigent fare better in the current system.
