Housing voucher law a big success, Santa Monica city attorney says
“We also plan to continue to spread the word as to how well this type of fair housing enforcement works to improve affordable housing opportunities and prevent homelessness,” Santa Monica Deputy City Attorney Gary Rhoades said.
The Santa Monica city attorney won a stipulated judgment and injunctions against landlords who denied a low-income tenant the right to use her voucher for Section 8 housing to help pay rent.
In 2015, the Santa Monica City Council passed an ordinance on fair housing that upheld the rights of Section 8 voucher holders by specifically designating them as a protected class, one of the first cities in the nation to do so.
