Judges told to treat family members as pro se litigants when giving legal advice
The California Supreme Court ethics committee opinion advised judges to explain to family members that they are prohibited from practicing law.
Judges can give limited legal guidance to their family members, but cannot accept compensation for providing it, neglect their official duties, or act as an advocate, according to a California Supreme Court ethics committee opinion issued Thursday.
Judges can provide family members general legal information and statements of law. They can also explain court procedures, court rules, and legal requirements, the opinion said.
