Newsom won’t appeal release of killer of Turkish diplomat
Harry Sassounian was convicted in 1984 of first degree murder for the shooting death of Kemal Arikan, the Los Angeles consul general of the Republic of Turkey. The killing drew national and international outrage.
The California prisons department will release a man convicted of murdering a Turkish diplomat now that Gov. Gavin Newsom says he will not appeal a superior court ruling that reversed his denial of parole.
The U.S. State Department and Turkish officials are criticizing Newsom's decision as an attack on democracy.
