Death penalty trials may be stayed pending a state Supreme Court ruling

The state Supreme Court is weighing whether to consider if the death penalty is unconstitutional since Gov. Gavin Newsom issued a moratorium. While the court is deciding, it is likely that all death penalty cases in California will be stayed, according to multiple death penalty lawyers.

While not a legal stay, the court's decision acts as a "practical one," according to San Mateo County District Attorney Stephen M. Wagstaffe.
