Contra Costa County jury awards $21.4M in benzene exposure case

A Contra Costa Superior Court jury awarded $21.4 million to the families of two brothers who died of cancer after being exposed to chemical benzene. The family of the two men sued their employer, Union Oil, which made the benzene-containing rubber solvent.

A Contra Costa County jury awarded $21.4 million to the families of two brothers who died from cancer after years of exposure to a chemical solvent often used in tire manufacturing. Gary Eaves and Randy Eaves were exposed to benzene, an organic chemical compound, while working at Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. in Texarkana, Arkansas, according to court documents. Then owned by Chevron Corp., Cooper Tire & Rubber later merged with Union Oil, now known as Unocal.
