A divided panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals struck down as unconstitutional Tuesday a 2006 law making it a crime to lie about having military medals.
The Stolen Valor Act violates the First Amendment right to free speech because it punishes someone for simply making a false statement, Circuit Judge Milan D. Smith Jr. wrote, with Circuit Judge Thomas G. Nelson concurring.
