New law bolsters oversight of contractors

Beginning Jan. 1, the new law requires the California Department of Industrial Relations and the Division of Occupational Safety and Health to report to the California State License Board any actions taken against licensed contractors.

Gov. Jerry Brown last week signed a bill that will tighten the regulation and oversight of construction contractors working in California.

The bill was prompted by the balcony collapse that killed six people last year at a Berkeley apartment building. Following the incident, it was revealed that the construction firm, Segue Construction Company, had in previous years paid out more than $26 million in construction defect settlements.
