San Diego's innovation economy represents a $52 billion engine

Compiled annually since 2005, the report also highlights the number of new companies created last year and the capital behind their growth, as well as the mergers and acquisitions, research grants and patents associated with the region's tech and life-science companies.

Connect, San Diego's technology and life-science business accelerator and trade organization, recently released a report gauging the growth of the region's "innovation economy."

The companies in that category - which range from newly minted startups to local giants such as Qualcomm and Cubic Corp. - generated nearly $52 billion, or 24 percent of the county's gross domestic product in 2015, according to Connect's 2015 Innovation Report.
